Matonyok headteacher signs MOU with members of committee |
On Jan 20, 2010 Asante Africa Foundation and Matonyok Primary School – Kenya signed a Memorandum of Understanding to build a critically needed water holding tank for the school. The drawings and plans are finished and it is time to break ground!!!!
The community of Matonyok is located in a semi-arid area and constantly battles with severe drought conditions and associated crop failure. One of the most impoverished school’s in the district, Motonyok Nursery and Primary School is a sheet metal school home to approximately 300 students.
This school, like many other schools in the area, is afflicted by significant poverty, and a general lack of basic school resources: water, food, desks, books, and teaching aids. Such items are essential to providing a quality education. Despite the hardships, the teachers are dedicated to providing the best education possible to the students. (You can see the hand made visual teaching aids on the classroom walls. ) The teachers are energetic and enthusiastic about this new partnership with Asante Africa Foundation.
When the leaders of the school met with us, they prioritized available water as their highest need. We were shown stacked bags of maize that could not be cooked for the noon meal because there was no water to cook with.
The water tank project is planned for completion June 2010! Clear project objectives and effective outcomes for the Motonyok Water Project have been completed. The school will build a large holding water tank on a protected cement slab that will house enough water for 2 weeks. Parents, and community members are participating by providing labor for the project!
This water will be used for noon day cooking, drinking, and general hand washing by the children. By providing water at the school, it will entice the children to regularly attend school, provide them with at least 1 meal a day, and minimize sanitation based illnesses. Once the children have full stomachs and are not ill, they can focus on playing and learning.
Once this priority is met, we will shift our focus to the next set of basic priorities: textbooks, desks, tables and bookshelves for the students, and chairs, teaching aids for the teachers.
We, Asante Africa Foundation, are truly excited about this new partnership and new project. We have no doubt that the addition of this water tank will improve the education for the students at Matonynok Nursery and Primary School. |
