Hope for the future begins with a solid foundation upon which the education of children can be built. Sometimes this is as simple as ensuring that children have clean well built classrooms, solid desks and chairs to work with, as well as up to date reading and writing materials to learn from with the guidance of dedicated teachers.
On January 4th, 2010 the Mwalimu Anna Academy in Mto wa Mbu, Tanzania opened the year with six new classrooms and a plethora of new teaching and learning materials. The progression of events at the Mwalimu Anna Academy over this past year is a testament to the perseverance of Anna Moshi and the Asante Africa Foundation to ensure that as many children as possible will receive a quality education in Mto wa Mbu.
Graduation CeremonySince Asante Africa Foundation's 2008 annual report, Anna Moshi's goal to build six new classrooms is complete: a tribute to her dedication to ensure that the children of her area receive a viable education. All the teachers and students were excited to get into the new classrooms and begin the year.
Even more exciting has been the beginning of a legacy as the school saw its second group of students graduate from kindergarten to grade one this year. This touchstone was a memorable event for all as the parents and teachers recognize that they are expanding the educational possibilities for all children in the area by dedicating themselves to their own children's education today. With their English-based curriculum, Mwalimu Anna Academy is ensuring that the students graduating from their programs will possess globally transferable skills, which will broaden their future prospects and with that the prospects of the community.
This ripple effect is best noted in the number of children attending the school. Where last year saw an intake of 70 students, the school is now educating 200 students with 70 students in boarding facilities. In addition, the school has increased its pedagogical staff from two teachers last year to eight this year. A fantastic moment that reveals the growing desire of the community to support the school and build an infrastructure in the community that values the education of its youth.
By setting achievable goals with a progressive vision, Mwalimu Anna Academy and the Asante Africa Foundation hope to continue to expand the educational possibilities for children in the Mto wa Mbu area of Tanzania for years to come. With the generous support of the board and donors from the Asante Africa Foundation and the hard work of the in-country staff, all of Anna Moshi's visions for the future of children in Tanzania will become a reality!
