October, 2008

Hellen and Stephanie explain some of the opportunities and challenges of education in the Maasai community as Hellen's local community seeks to balance improved education (including the construction of a new school) with the preservation of their traditional culture. Hellen also shares her powerful journey from being removed from primary school and immediately married off as a fifth wife to becoming a trained teacher who works hard in her community to help innocent girls to get a education. Hellen says that education is the most powerful weapon to change the world and talks about her partnership with the Asante Africa Foundation to build schools and educate the Maasai you as being not to change the Maasai culture, but to empower them to be self-reliant. Asante Africa Foundation is a not-for-profit organization focused on enabling childrens education in Eastern Africa through granting student scholarships, building schools, and providing basic materials such as desks and textbooks.
