The Valley Sentinel – June 30, 2012
Oakland, CA – Asante Africa Foundation, an Oakland-based non-profit that believes in the power of education as a catalyst to help young people create a future where they live their dreams, has partnered with Khan Academy to bring over a thousand math and science videobased lessons into rural schools in East Africa. This natural partnership developed through a shared belief by both organizations that all children deserve access to a quality, world-class education.
Asante Africa Foundation has assembled two teams of translators in Kenya and Tanzania. The translators are comprised of high school graduates and college students who are proficient in math and science as well as fluent in English and Swahili.
Once the translation project is complete, a second phase, scheduled in the Fall of 2012, will pilot a teacher’s toolkit and training that brings the e-learning technology into classrooms. It is anticipated that by having this type of resource available, it will spur school infrastructure investments by local and national education leaders.
The project has also received support from two Silicon Valley and Bay Area based companies; SAP, a German software corporation with a regional office in Palo Alto and Globalize Networks, LLC., an Oakland based company. SAP donated computer laptops and Globalize Networks prepared software to enable both project phases.
